What a Luxury

It's not always what you think.

What does luxury mean to you?

Perhaps it's a beautiful home, an extraordinary view or something you've always wanted to own.

But sometimes luxury is much simpler than that.

We use the word in all kinds of everyday conversations.

"What a luxury to have a little extra time in the morning."

"What a luxury to be able to walk everywhere."

"What a luxury to have someone you can count on."

Often, we're not talking about something particularly expensive. We're talking about something we appreciate. Something that makes our lives easier, more enjoyable or simply better.

I've been thinking about that distinction, particularly because I work in real estate with Sotheby's International Realty Canada.

The Sotheby's name has a long association with luxury. From its connection to the internationally recognized auction house to the remarkable properties represented around the world, it's understandable that the name brings to mind beautiful things and significant price tags.

But I've always thought there's more to luxury than that.

When I think about luxury in my own life, it's often the everyday things.

It's having beautiful views from my windows. Being able to walk downtown to restaurants and shops. Living in a community where I can call a neighbour and head out for a walk and a chat.

These are things I genuinely appreciate, and they've made a meaningful difference to my quality of life.

Of course, what feels like a luxury to me may be entirely different for someone else. It might be having more space for a growing family, less to maintain as life changes, or simply living closer to the people and places that matter most.

What makes a home special isn't always reflected in its price.

Think about the times you've received truly wonderful service.

Someone who takes the time to understand what you need. Someone who knows their business, pays attention to the details and offers advice you can trust.

There's a certain luxury in that experience. Not because it's extravagant, but because it gives you confidence and peace of mind.

I think the same is true in real estate. A home doesn't have to come with an extraordinary price tag for the decisions surrounding it to be important. And the care, attention and expertise that go into helping someone make those decisions shouldn't depend on the price of the property.

To me, that's a luxury everyone should be able to experience.
